Petrified Wood: Fossilized Organic Matter

From the Latin word Petro, meaning rock, the petrification process replaces organic cells with minerals. The minerals harden into stone while retaining the structural elements, such as tree rings. Therefore, unlike an impression, these fossils are three-dimensional representations of the original plant.

The original matter and the type of mineral replacements determine coloring.

The most common replacement minerals are silicates, such as quartz, chalcedony, or opal. While pure quartz is clear, other minerals that are introduced alter its color.

The type and amount of each minerals affects the coloring.

As you look at the fabulous lamps, tables, and other décor items made from Petrified Wood, you’ll be able to identify some of these minerals.

Petrified Wood is a testament to ancient environments and transformative processes in nature. For example, the world’s largest existence of Petrified Wood is found in Arizona Petrified Forest. Once a region teeming with water, woods, and wildlife, it is now an arid desert. Like the petrified wood itself, the environment has been transformed and new flora, fauna and wildlife have learned to thrive there.
