Why this Rocks:

Araucarioxylon arizonicum is an extinct species of conifer that is the state fossil of Arizona.  The petrified wood of this tree is frequently referred to as “Rainbow wood”. This piece has textured sides and back. The red, orange, brown, and cream colors bring a warm aura and would make for a great Father’s Day or Grad gift.

In geology, petrification is the process by which organic material becomes a fossil through the replacement of the original material and the filling of the original pore spaces with minerals.  The Arizona petrified wood is found in the area surrounding the Petrified National Forest, near Holbrook, Arizona.

Minerals such as manganese, iron, and copper were in the water/mud during the petrification process and give the petrified wood is beautiful colors.
